Belote in a nutshell

Played by four players in fixed partnerships with 32 cards (7 through Ace). Each deal starts with an auction: the taking team announces a contract of 80 to 160 points (capot 250) and a trump suit, then must capture at least that score. First team to 1,001 points wins the match.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards are used in Belote?

32 cards — 7 through Ace in all four suits; cards 2 to 6 are removed.

How many players play Belote?

Four players in two fixed partnerships, partners sitting opposite each other.

How does the auction work in Coinche?

Each player bids 80 to 160 points in steps of 10 (or capot, 250) with a trump suit, or passes. The last standing bid becomes the contract.

What is a coinche?

The defending team doubles the deal's points by coinching, before the first card is played. A surcoinche by the takers quadruples them.

How many points is belote worth?

Holding the trump King and Queen together scores 20 points, counted toward the contract and kept even on failure.

What is the capot worth?

Taking all eight tricks scores 100 instead of the last-trick 10 — 252 points for the deal; the announced capot contract is worth 250.

What happens when the contract fails?

The takers keep only a declared belote (20), and the defenders score at least 160 plus the contract value (×2 coinched, ×4 surcoinched).
