Belote Coinchée Rules — Complete Guide

Belote Coinchée is a 4-player partnership game played with 32 cards (7 to Ace). Each deal, the auction decides the taking team: it announces a contract of 80 to 160 points (or capot, 250) and names trumps. Make at least your bid and you score your points plus the contract value; fail and the defenders score 160 plus the contract. First team to 1,001 points wins.

Deck and players

Only 32 cards are used: ranks 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace in all four suits. Each of the four players (two partnerships) receives all 8 cards, dealt 3-2-3.

The auction: contract and trumps

Starting left of the dealer, each player bids a contract — a number of points and a trump suit — or passes. A higher bid must exceed the previous one by at least 10 points; the same value may be bid in a higher-ranking suit (clubs < diamonds < hearts < spades). Capot (250) is a bid to take all eight tricks. Each player speaks once per deal; if everyone passes, the hand is redealt.

Card values

In trumps the Jack is the boss of the game (20), followed by the 9 (14). In side suits the Ace rules.

Card points total 152, plus 10 for the last trick: every deal is worth 162 points.

Trick play

You must follow suit; when trumps are led you must also beat the highest trump already played — even your partner's. Void in the led suit with an opponent winning, you must ruff; if a trump has been played you must overruff if you can, otherwise under-trump. If your partner is winning, you may play anything.

The trick winner leads next. Eight tricks per deal; the last trick is worth a 10-point bonus (dix de der), and taking all eight tricks is a capot worth 100 instead of 10.

Belote and Rebelote

Holding the trump King and Queen scores 20 points — declared as "belote" when the first is played and "rebelote" on the second. The 20 points count toward fulfilling the contract and are kept even if the contract fails.

Scoring

Each team keeps the card points it captures, plus the dix de der (or 100 for a capot) and belote.

Contract made: the takers score their points (rounded to ten, halves up) plus the bid value; the defenders keep their points. Contract failed: the takers keep only their belote, and the defenders score at least 160 plus the contract value.

A coinched deal counts double, a surcoinched deal quadruple — and only the winning team scores.

The first team to 1,001 points wins the match.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards are used in Belote?

32 cards — 7 through Ace in all four suits; cards 2 to 6 are removed.

How many players play Belote?

Four players in two fixed partnerships, partners sitting opposite each other.

How does the auction work in Coinche?

Each player bids 80 to 160 points in steps of 10 (or capot, 250) with a trump suit, or passes. The last standing bid becomes the contract.

What is a coinche?

The defending team doubles the deal's points by coinching, before the first card is played. A surcoinche by the takers quadruples them.

How many points is belote worth?

Holding the trump King and Queen together scores 20 points, counted toward the contract and kept even on failure.

What is the capot worth?

Taking all eight tricks scores 100 instead of the last-trick 10 — 252 points for the deal; the announced capot contract is worth 250.

What happens when the contract fails?

The takers keep only a declared belote (20), and the defenders score at least 160 plus the contract value (×2 coinched, ×4 surcoinched).
